Staying Safe on the River

At DRKC we are keen to help you keep yourself, your friends, and your gear safe on the river. Here is a guide you can use to make sure you're set for your next trip on the river. For wind, weather, and river flow resources, check out the Know before you go tab. For our DRKC recommended safety gear list, check out the Safety gear tab. Before you go on any paddling trip:

1. Check the forecasts

• Check the weather

• Check the rainfall

• Know the flow

2. Paddle buddies

• Are you paddling with someone you know and trust?

• Do you know the ability of everyone in the group?

• Tell someone that isn't on your trip where you're going and when you're due off the river

3. Safety gear

• Do you have a drybag with ALL the correct safety gear?

• Do you have a PLB or a method of contacting someone if you get in to trouble?

• Layer clothing appropriately - do you need an extra thermal?

4. Check your paddle gear

• How are those rudder cables looking?

• If your boat leaking?

• Does your PDF fit properly - when did you last float test it?

5. Have a hmmmm

• Are you feeling fit and well to paddle today?

• When did you last eat?

• Do you have enough food and water?

• Are you fit enough to paddle the distance/difficulty?

• Are you experienced enough to paddle this section of water?

Kayaking on rivers, particularly grade 2+ water, involves risks and hazards that could lead to physical injury, emotional stress, or even death! When paddling on our rivers, please note that river conditions can change rapidly due to weather, water flow, and debris. Hazards include:

  • strong flows,
  • submerged obstacles,
  • strainers,
  • rocks,
  • and drops,

all of which can cause paddlers to capsize their kayaks, become trapped or result in a collision. In our cooler months, cold water immersion and paddling in remote locations can increase the risk of hypothermia and potentially delayed rescue.
